Common questions
My performer isn't dancing to the beat
Beat-syncing needs the System Audio Recording permission so the app can read the tempo of what's playing. To grant it:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Audio Recording (or Screen & System Audio Recording) and enable Groove Unit.
- Make sure music is actually playing on the Mac — from Apple Music, Spotify, a browser tab, anywhere.
If you decline the permission, the performer still appears and dances at a natural, relaxed cadence — just not locked to the beat.
No performer appears
A performer walks on when music is playing. To summon one any time — even in silence — right-click the Groove Unit icon in the menu bar and choose Take the Stage.
Groove Unit runs in the menu bar with no Dock icon or main window, so look for its icon in the top-right of your screen.
How do I control playback from the performer?
Double-click the performer to play/pause, and ⌥-click to skip to the next track. These send the same standard media-key events as the keys on your keyboard.
How do I switch companions?
Right-click the menu-bar icon to open the picker and choose who's on stage. The crew — Kai, Penny, and Sam — grows over time.
What are the system requirements?
macOS 14.4 or later. Beat detection uses an audio feature that Apple introduced in macOS 14.4. Groove Unit is sandboxed and sips power while idle.
Does Groove Unit collect any data?
No. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no network access — audio is analyzed live on your Mac and nothing is ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. See the Privacy Policy for detail.
How do I quit or remove the app?
Right-click the menu-bar icon and choose Quit Groove Unit. To remove it, drag Groove Unit from your Applications folder to the Trash — its local settings go with it.
